4x4 in Schools Technology Challenge World Finals 2016 in England
Two student teams from ISE Schools in Athens, and another team from Nicosia represented Greece & Cyprus at the recent Land Rover 4x4 In Schools Technology Challenge World Finals 2016, held in Coventry, England, from 3 – 7 July 2016.
The teams named Tessera Extreme Racing, NewGen Motors and Motus competed against 20 teams from 13 countries at the event and they had all spent many months designing, building and testing miniature remote-controlled 4x4 vehicles to tackle challenging off-road tracks. They were judged on all elements of their project from engineering and design to team identity, sponsorship and marketing.
More than 130 students in 22 teams from 13 global countries participated after winning national final competitions in their own countries. Countries competing are Australia, Brazil, Cyprus, Czech Republic, England, Greece, Malaysia, Portugal, Scotland, Singapore, Slovakia, South Africa and USA. In the Challenge, teams of students design and build a remote controlled scale-model four wheel drive vehicle that can negotiate a tough off-road test track, with water dips, rope bridges and rocky terrain. Teams are judged on their marketing pit display, project portfolio, engineering and presentation skills. Each student has a different role in the team – project manager, engineer, marketing etc.
Across four days, Tessera Extreme Racing, New GenMotors, Motus and their rivals followed an intense competition schedule. The third day of the event saw the competition reach its peak, with a dramatic day of judging and track action. The World Final culminated in an awards celebration dinner, where 15 awards were presented before the crowning of the 2016 Land Rover 4x4 in Schools World Champions. The winning team were presented with an impressive trophy and a scholarship to Harper Adams University in the UK
The Land Rover 4x4 in Schools Technology Challenge introduces students to the exciting world of engineering and has now been launched in over 15 countries around the world including Greece and Cyprus. The company’s school STEM education programme engages 300,000 young people each year in hands-on education projects which increase their interest in engineering careers and STEM subjects.
Dimitris Polymatidis from the ISE partner SETApps, the Land Rover 4x4 in Schools Technology Competition country coordinator for Greece and Cyprus, said: “It was an enriching experience for our students on so many different levels. The Challenge gives the students a chance to put their classroom learning into practice in a very engaging way. Most of the students are keen to pursue engineering as a career, so it’s a great way for them to be introduced to Jaguar Land Rover, one of the premier automotive manufacturers in the world and helps them to have skills, experiences, friendships and memories which will stay with them throughout their lives”.
