Eratosthenes Experiment 2015

Thursday, 19 March, 2015 to Friday, 20 March, 2015

In 2014 a total of 350 schools in 37 countries participated in the Eratosthenes Experiment to measure the Earth’s circumference.  The Greek mathematician, Eratosthenes (276 BC-194 BC) used this same experiment to enable him to prove the sphericity of the Earth and to measure its circumference.

Schools all over the world are invited to celebrate science and education by calculating the circumference of the Earth using eLearning educational tools and simple instruments. Teachers and students will be able to use specially created Inspiring Science Education learning scenario demonstrators.  Re-creating this simple experiment helps measure students problem solving competency.

A new, enriched edition of the Eratosthenes Experiment is taking place! This year the experience will be double: it will last two days and will be held on 19-20 March 2015
